Gallery Host, Denver Art Museum

In July 2015 I started my retirement employment at the Denver Art Museum as a Gallery Host. It was my dream job, the best job that I had in my entire life. This beautifully carved wooden horse was made during the Chinese Han dynasty, years 202 BC to 220 CE. This carving has been displayed on the Asian floor at the Art Museum until 2017, when the Ponti designed building was closed for remodeling.

sketches Han Horse

I have made probably made 100 sketches of the Han horse and carved the head ten times. It's an amazing horse, I imagine that there was a carving guild that would carve these horses for the masses. I think the master carver would carve the complicated head and then lesser carvers or apprentices would carve the body and legs and then it would be doweled together. I plan to finish this piece to go with the wood carving Captain Jinxs and Warrior Chief;

Nativity Art Show 2018

These seventeen carvings are being shown in the 2018 Nativity Days art show. The carvings represent probably 25 years of carving. They were carved almost entirely during my lunch breaks in the several offices that I worked in throughout my working career. I’ve never had a chance to show these altogether at one place and I thought this would be the perfect venue for this retrospecrive. I had to ask some of my collectors to loan their pieces back to me for this little show.

Chiaroscuro Man

I love this photo that my wife took of me pursuing one of my favorite pastimes. Could I be a renaissance man who loves the arts? Yes, I love the arts and the accordion. I will try my hand at making a painting alla chiaroscuro from this photo.

Kilmacthomas Bridge

Whenever I travel I always take my little pochade box and travel easel. I've always enjoyed painting in Ireland, from my first trip on our honeymoon where I painted with watercolors to the last several when I brought acrylic paints. Acrylics behave properly in Ireland with it's damp humid climate, they stay soft and never skin over. I never especially wanted to visit Ireland during their winter season. This year's trip we were hoping for an early spring that would begin in April. Instead Ireland had a drawn out winter and when we arrived the tree were bare and the grasses water logged and brown.

Plein Air painting

This photo was taken by my new Plein Air painting friend David Sorg at Roger's Grove in Longmont, Colorado. This was at a weekly Boulder Plein Air Paint-out. It was a beautifull day on the St. Vrain River, you can just see a small hint of the "S" curve of the river looking down stream. The simple pleasure of painting outdoors, I Love It!

Odalisque on a bagel

I'm really channeling the Francophile in myself. The "Odalisque on a Bagel" was influenced by Ingres "La Grande Odelesque" and Claude Monet's "Water Lilies".
